Burton was born in 1958, in the city of Burbank, California, to Jean Burton (née Erickson), the owner of a cat-themed gift shop, and Bill Burton, a former minor league baseball player who would later work for the Burbank Park and Recreation Department.Burton studied at Burbank High School, but he was not a particularly good student. He was a very introspective person, and found his pleasure in painting, drawing and watching films. His future work would be heavily influenced by what he read, such as works by Edgar Allan Poe and the horror and science fiction films he watched, such as Godzilla, and films made by Hammer Film Productions, the works of Ray Harryhausen and Vincent Price. After high school he attended California Institute of the Arts, there he studied animation. There he worked on own short animations like Stalk of the Celery Monster which won him a place as a Disney Animator. He eventually left, but he did produce Vincent a short stop animation and Hensel and Gretel a Kung Fu take on the Grimm's tale and Frankenweenie a take on Frankenstein but only a boy who brings his dead dog back to life. Disney shortly let Burotn go as they refused to fund future films that were 'too dark and Scary' for childern to watch. His frankenweenie landed him a directors role in the film Pee Wee's Big Adventure. After his stint in Disney Burton's Career as a director took off. he directed and produced many off beat blockbusters including: The Nightmare Before Christmas, Beetlejuice, Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Corpse Bride, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland, James and the Giant Peach, Mars Attacks, Planet of the Apes.

- A fork with a curly tail and eyes. This is a homage to his werid and wonderful collection of poetry and illustrations entitled 'The Melancholy of Oyster Boy and other stories' and his character 'Staring Girl'
-
I once knew a girl
who would just stand there and stare.
At anyone or anything,
she seemed not to care
She'd stare at the ground,
She'd stare at the sky.
She'd stare at you for hours,
and you'd never know why.
But after winning the local staring contest,
she finally gave her eyes
a well-deserved rest.
