Logos :)

Part of your typography assignment was to create a typography ID logo for the person sitting next to us in class. Kate Mc Garry sits next to me. In order to get a better understanding of one another we set aside some time to ask each other about ourselves.
Kate is an overall lovely individual. She's 19 years old and is originally from Brownstown, Kilkenny. Her mother is a social worker and her father is a water technician and a part part veg man. Kate originally wanted to be a primary school teacher but ended up changing her mind. She is an elegant looking girl whose favourite feature is her hair. She has admitted that she is slightly OCD about certain things and keeps herself extremly organised which I have seen for myself. Kate, like myself, believes in Karma and would never dream of being anything but nice to everyone she come across. Kate is bubbly in her own way and isnt afraid to have the laugh. Overall Kate is one of those type of girls you cannot fault she is simple lovely.

The following are Logo designs I have come up with that I hope will reflect Kate.

Periodic Table of Kate's element
This a play on the scientific table of elements. I believe that Kate is made up of alot of endearing qualities or 'elements'. I have included these positive elements into the design and I have come up with different solutions

The above Image is a representation of Kate's interest in crafts and also her past ambition to be a primary school teacher children would learn to paint and draw using paint by numbers so i thought this would be an ideal idea to incorporate into my logo. This is the 'Kate by Numbers' logo.

Stationary
As part of the logo design we had to make up stationary to go with the design this included business cards, letterheads and compliment cards. Here are some of my efforts.

Overall i loved this project as I got an insight on the processes involved in the production of logos. I also had the opportunity to learn more about my fellow classmates which I believe has allowed us to feel more comfortable in our new role as Graphic Design students :)

Kinetic Typography Stumble

This is a website that I came across on www.stumbleupon.com whilst stumbling typography. Its called kinetic typography which is a animated. Kinetic means one thing lending to another like a domino effect so the movement of one piece of type leads to the movement of another......I love this conept!. The person who created is a student which suprised me the most.

Typography Brief

Ok so the last three weeks we have been concentrating on typography and creating logos through typography.

Our first task was to make as many designs as possible with one letter in one typeface and it had to be done in black marker and withoutr distorting the orignal letterform. My letter was g and my tyepface was Baskervillle. Out of the the mutliple designs we created we had too pick our best tweleve. Here are the results.

Our second task was to distort the letter e.g cut away pieces, stretching, manipulate cetrain areas in shapes.

Creating a g brush and filling the g with g's :)

Using the puppet tool to distorta and manipulate the g into a different shape

A selected pieces of the 'tail' of the g and placing them in a scattered pattern

Using the liquify tool

Freezing the Stamps :)

For the easter break i thought id mess around with display options for the stamps i thought it would be nifty to freeze them in ice cubes.

I found this silicon ice mould in the dealz shop in town. Since one of my ideas was a melting penguin I couldnt resist buying it and trying it out :)

I

Final Designs

The following images are the first designs I came up with for a final design the theme was how global warming effects a animals and their habitats and the concept was that the animals were melting away. I know this is surreal but I thought it would ad shock value. The images were made using found images and manipulating them on Photoshop. I thought the first batch of stamp designs were decent enough but the message was a tad confusing, My tutor and a few fellow student kinda of got a oil pollution theme from the images which isn't my theme. So I tad to go back to the drawing board.

I thought this was my best image so far but the message is confusing

I thought this had a slight citizen Kane look about it. I ratrized this image by mistake so its blurred but I print this out  before I made this mistake

The next four designs are the final pieces. I was given the advice to make the animals look more like ice sculptures melting so i went with this Idea. I also incorporated a slogan for each.

In conclusion I found this project both interseting yet frustrating. I found the research and photoshopping the images interesting and exciting but i the concept and the stamp idea I wasnt too fond of .I hope the finished design will be ok but I'm not 100% confident about6 the final design. I believe if we were given a defiant theme or clarified 'conservation' and if this wasn't a stamp design project but a poster campaign it would have been more successful.

Research Presentation: Prezi

Research Presentation

As part of my project I had to present my research to the class. I used an online presentaion maker called Prezi (www.prezi.com).
I found Prezi to be really easy to use and the result looked very professional yet fun.
 In my presentaion I looked at the following topics;
  • The uses for stamps
  • Examples of stamps
  • Why we have to Reuse, Reduce and Recycle
  • fossil fuels, deforestation and pollution
  • WWII recycling campaign
  • My ideas

Stamp it!!!

Hi my name is Lorraine Breen aka Vis-Com Vixen, I'm studying Visual Communication in the Limerick School of Art and Design. This blog has been created for a specific purpose and that purpose is to document my progress with the projects given to me in my first semester as a graphic design student.

The first project we have been given is a stamp design project.

The challenge is as follows...We have 'to design four stamps as a means of encouraging consumers to make positive environmental changes and educate future generations with regard to one of the following e.g.
  • energy conservation
  • low-impact transport
  • reducing water over consumption
  • Eco- friendly products
  • Organic food
Conservation can involve any of the following;
  • Ecosystems
  • Fishing
  • Forests
  • Natural Resources
  • Ozone depletion
  • Pollution -Water, Air, Noise, Light
  • Endangered Species
  • Toxins
  • Waste
The stamps would have to help change the mind set of the consumer and encourage them to undertake practical activities for the future and think of innovative ways to optimise energy and reduce waste in our day-to-day lives.

The stamp has to have a few key design elements, has to have a depth in and around 37mm has to include the price and the word Eire.

I'm looking forward to the challenge :)
